"Bumble Bee! Where are you?" Bristol's mother shouted throughout the house. Her voice wasn't loud, but it still echoed off the walls. Bristol thought that it was strange that no matter what her mother did, whether it be eating breakfast in the nook of the kitchen, or attending a very publicized event, her presence was always known.
Bristol poked her head out from behind the door. "In the bathroom!" She declared, hiding her wet slicked body. At this point in her life, she didn't know what to conjure from it. Was this really the type of body guys wanted to see? The reflection she had been seeing lately showed some lanky awkward person. She wrapped the towel around herself, leaning forward to wipe the fog off the medicine cabinet. "I'm going to be so late..." she said to herself.
Ten minutes had passed and finally Bristol was ready. Barely making it down the stairs, she sat at the bottom of the steps to adjust her black flats. "For once in my life, I'd love to go to school without a uniform. Why do we have to look like a herd of sheep all the time?"
"Darling, quit complaining. You'll be at college in no time. Then you can do what ever your heart desires. But until then, you need to get you butt in gear. You're already late." Michelle sat down on one of the cream upholstered chairs located in some stuffy room Bristol never went into. "Have a good day and stay out of trouble!" was all she could get out before the door slammed. She hadn't been feeling very well lately, but pushed it aside. It was probably related to the simple fact that she would be going into labor any second now. She grabbed onto the arm rests and pushed herself up, then waddled her way to the couch. Maybe lying down would help.

Bristol lifted her head from her pillow, wiping the sweat from her face with her forearm. She'd been having this dream ever since her mother passed six years ago. It was the last time she had spoken to her mother and she never even said goodbye. "Are you okay, Riz?" She turned her head to the doorway. Standing there was her roommate tapping on her watch. "You are going to be late for your classes."
There was no way she could pay attention to some lecture today. She wasn't able to concentrate after that dream whenever it happened. "I'm not going today. Not feeling so well. Can you shut the door please?" Bristol wasn't trying to be rude. She just needed sometime alone. No matter how many years had gone by, she still couldn't handle it. Her mother left her when she needed her the most. She wasn't there to help pick out her prom dress or reassure her that her body was just going through a stage. Bristol had to do it alone, because the help from her father may have been sincere, but it wasn't doing any good.
She rolled onto her back, shutting her eyes tightly. Maybe if she went back to bed, she would be able to dream about her mother coming back. Maybe everything would return to its normalcy. |
